“Those Nigerian accents were terrible” Reactions to the Portrayal of Lagos in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

The latest Marvel movie, Captain America: Civil War is currently showing in cinemas and its been receiving positive feedback since its premiere. However not everyone’s super impressed with all there is about the movie as Nigerians who are always quick to come to the defence of their country have been reacting online to the portrayal of Lagos state (one the Largest cities in Africa) in the movie, mainly lamenting the pronunciation of ‘Lagos’.

Just in case you missed the memo here’s the synopsis of the movie; Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

At this time i am not quite sure what the intention was when they first thought of including Lagos – Nigeria to the script. But for a movie this huge, i do agree with some of the comments on this subject matter, they could have done their homework and found the correct way to pronounce Lagos (leɪɡɒs) unless they really don’t care about which is the right or wrong way to pronounce it.

Check out some reactions to the portrayal of Lagos after the jump.

  6. Pls Mrs Cindy hold that trap hole you call mouth….they acted in our country so what? You just so racist and stupid with a bleached white face and brown teeth with mad freckles do not dare insult our country again….you’re just fucked

  7. How is the accent terrible…
So what if its terrible are you the producer…do you think everyone talks like Americans so pls hold your peace I am a Nigerian and we can’t change our accents for shit cause that’s our signature

    • Excuse you Cindy, in this day and age that ignorance flag doesn’t fly. It wasn’t hard to find out, the Brits seem to be able to pronounce it just fine. Remember this next time a major foreign production miss-pronounces a major city from your country, or uses an abysmal accent to represent your country…I’m sure you’d be very happy with their ignorance.

      • I think you people are really crying over nothing. It’s all fictional, make-believe so why complain that they didn’t pronounce the name of your country right.
I am from Ghana and would have been happy just to see my country be in a big film like this one even if they failed in how they mentioned our name. So get over yourselves and enjoy the film
